Occupying Vacant Seats of Spiritual Authority

By Jonas Clark

Who will fill the seats of governing authority?
Moses My servant is dead (Joshua 1:2).

The Lord spoke these words to Joshua thousands of years ago as He called the young warrior to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. Those words marked a transition in the spirit in the days of Joshua and Caleb.

Thousands of years later, yet another transition is taking place with the deaths of Lester Sumrall, Kenneth Hagin Sr., Derek Prince, Bill Bright, and John Osteen.

The Body of Christ benefited greatly from the unwavering faith in God, prophetic direction, and godly admonition that these men imparted to the Church for many decades. Each of these men were apostles of faith that occupied a position of governing authority in the Body of Christ.

These anointed leaders have now completed their courses and gone on to reap their just rewards with our Lord Jesus Christ. Their presence in the natural will be sorely missed, but moreover, the passing of these generals has left unoccupied seats of spiritual authority. Now, the Holy Spirit is telling many of us the same thing: “There are vacancies in the spirit.” Where are the Joshuas and Calebs of this generation? Who will fill the vacancies in the spirit?

God is preparing leaders in wilderness places right now to occupy the spiritual vacancies left by our forefathers; leaders the world has never heard of; leaders that have never been on television or on radio or featured within the pages of popular Christian periodicals. God is readying to introduce this new breed of leaders to the Body of Christ.

Like John the Baptist, these new breed leaders have been hidden in the wilderness until the time of their revealing. They will be men and women of integrity, faith, vision, and apostolic grit that will not compromise with religion but will have a burning desire to go to the nations with the Gospel. They will carry a great passion for the eternal purpose of the Church as they present the increase of His government to the Body of Christ.

When Moses died, God spoke to Joshua. He said, “Moses my servant is dead, now it’s time to cross over the Jordan and possess the Promised Land.” Moses was a great leader. He took the people of God to the outskirts of the Promised Land. While the Israelites could see the land, it was Joshua and Caleb – men of a different spirit – whom God used to lead the people through warfare into their inheritance.

Is this a prophetic type and shadow of where we are today? Are there truly leadership vacancies in the spirit waiting to be filled? Are you part of the new breed of leaders that God is raising up to fill them? New breed leaders love Jesus but are sick and tired of dead lifeless religion. They are bored with church as usual. They feel like they just don’t fit in and they are ready to pursue a change.

The Church has been in spiritual transition for the last several years. It is almost like we have been caught between moves of God. Every move of God has been a preparation and a steppingstone into something greater. We needed the Great Reformation. We needed the Holiness Movement. We needed the Faith Movement.

Now it’s time for the Apostolic Movement. The Church is presently experiencing a restoration of the apostolic grace. With that grace is coming a greater boldness, determination, and a fresh willingness to possess what belongs to every believer. Words like revelation, build, church, authority, government, teams, equip, and send will become commonplace. Modern examples of equipped believers sent out of strong local churches on teams will mirror what’s written in the Book of Acts.

With that release of apostolic grace, however, is also a challenge of ministry orientation, roles, functions and structures of ministries. Of course, it also includes the grace necessary to fill the spiritual vacancies left behind by those who have pioneered before us.

New breed believers will dearly miss those great generals who have left this earth, but new breed believers can rejoice in the understanding that they were born for such a time as this and determine in their hearts to press on with the great Cause of Jesus Christ.

Jesus declared that He would present to Himself a glorious church without spot or wrinkle. The Church’s greatest days lie just ahead.

With every natural death, there is wealth left behind. Who will inherit the spiritual wealth of the impartations of yesterday to take the Church into its glorious future? Who will fill the seats of governing authority? Who will occupy the vacancies in the spirit?

God is waiting for the 21st century Joshua generation to rise up.
