In a report by Fox News “We all talk to people who talk to people and there are people close to the Obama campaign in the course of conversations who made clear to me that there was very high level discussions. The Obama people expect Powell to endorse him,” Bill Kristol told FOX News.
Bill Kristol is the editor of Weekly Standard and a regular contributor at Fox. In an exclusive earlier this week, he said inside sources suggested Powell would show up in Denver in the week of Aug. 25 specifically to back the presumptive presidential nominee.
Citing the sources Kristol said, “He (Colin Powell) may well give a speech at the Democratic convention explaining his endorsement of Obama.”
Kristol speculates that this is not an absolute done deal, and that democrats are very confident that Powell will endorse Obama.
Powell said he hasn’t endorsed anyone yet and wouldn’t be attending the convention.
“I do not have time to waste on Bill Kristol’s musings,” Powell told ABC News. “I am not going to the convention. I have made this clear.”
A Powell endorsement of Obama would cause political shock waves throughout the nation, to say the least. His endorsement could very likely seal the deal for Barack Obama attracting moderates and fringe Republicans to the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate.
Powell is a long time republican, as former national security adviser he served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. He was secretary of state for the younger President Bush.
One would think if he should endorse any one candidate, being a military man himself, it should certainly be John McCain.
Powell has met with the presidential candidates and has unofficially advised both Obama and McCain but had not endorsed anyone.
Kristol said sources told him Powell will “quite possibly” speak at the Democratic convention on the same night as Obama’s vice-presidential selection and former President Bill Clinton.
“The Obama people are quietly trying to line up a pretty strong convention,” Kristol said. “I think the Obama campaign shouldn’t be underestimated. Obviously anyone would like to have Powell’s endorsement.”
