Should Condi Be McCain’s VP?

ABCNews’ Mary Bruce Reports reported Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is courting the vice presidential nomination.

“Condi Rice has been actively, actually in recent weeks, campaigning for this,” said Bob Senor Sunday on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” who added that Rice has been “cozying up” to the Republican elite.

The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, conducted March 24-29 among 1,001 adults, finds that only 27% view General David Petraeus favorably, compared to a favorable vice of Condoleezza Rice at a staggering high level of 57%. Rice’s popularity is head and shoulders higher than Obama, McCain or Clinton!

What’s more remarkable is that the Pew Research Poll shows Rice is this amazingly popular despite the Bush administration hitting record low ratings for its handling of foreign policy. More than three-quarters of Republicans (77%) and 54% of independents have a positive opinion of her. Remarkably, Democrats are evenly split in their opinion of Rice, with 43% expressing favorable views and on 44% having an unfavorable opinion of the sitting Secretary of State.

Mary Beth Brown, biographer of the book “Condi” (Thomas Nelson Publishing, 2008) and the New York Times and USA Today bestselling book, “Hand of Providence: The Strong and Quiet Faith of Ronald Reagan” explains that McCain’s vice presidential pick will come under particular scrutiny because of his age, 72, speculating McCain will choose a young running mate like Condoleezza Rice who has instant name recognition to avoid the 30 to 45 days it would take to educate Americans to a lesser known candidate.

Mary Beth also discusses that ABC News feature that reported, “There’s this ritual in Washington: The Americans for Tax Reform, which is headed by Grover Norquist, he holds a weekly meeting of conservative leaders — about 100, 150 people, sort of inside, chattering, class types,” Senor said. “They all typically get briefings from political conservative leaders. Ten days ago, they had an interesting visit — Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice — the first time a secretary of state has visited the Wednesday meeting.”

Brown suggests that one of the shrewdest moves John McCain could make would be to pick Condoleezza Rice as his running mate to offer an articulate, intelligent, experienced person who, if the McCain-Rice ticket prevails, would become America’s first black and first female vice president—and perhaps in 2012 the first black or female U. S. President in history!

What say you, Christians? Would you like to see Condi on the ticket?
