Around 1,000 Christians have held a rally in Indonesia’s Papua province, against any implementation of Islamic law.
Radio Australia — A growing number of Muslims are settling in Papua, and the Christian protestors say they’re opposed to the introduction of sharia law, Islamic boarding schools, and Islamic banking.
Observers say while the Indonesian province of Aceh is the only area where sharia is part of a local autonomy deal, some local governments have tried to bring in sharia regulations.
Although Indonesia’s population is primarily Muslim, some areas - especially in the east - have Christian majorities.
