Prayer Language and Speaking in Tongues: Do you Speak Holy Ghost?

Mary Alice IsleibThe Holy Spirit has given us a powerful prayer language that we can use as a weapon against the wiles of the enemy. Are you using all the weapons in your spiritual arsenal? Many are adept at wielding the sword of the Spirit and pleading the blood of Jesus against principalities and powers. Others do spiritual warfare through walking in obedience and love. Still others dispatch ministering angels, worship or prophesy against the enemy, declaring his ultimate doom. But Scripture teaches of another weapon that Spirit-filled believers can include in our artillery as we press in to do damage to enemy forces in the hostile clash between the kingdom of darkness and the Kingdom of Light: praying in tongues.

Seeing prayer as a part of God’s war arsenal can be difficult for some believers to grasp. Tradition teaches us that our prayers only touch God and that in order to be holy we should be quiet and still. However, the Bible declares that effective fervent prayer releases God’s power (James 5:16). When we pray, we are permitted by Scripture to be fervent (passionate, bold, expressive, free, demonstrative, intense, and the like). When we pray along these lines, God’s power is then made available to work in three spiritual levels.

First of all, that prayer power works in the highest heaven where God is; it engages all He is and all He has promised. Secondly, that power is released against the demonic strongholds of the principalities and powers in the “second heaven” (the atmosphere from terra firma to the starting place of God’s domain in the third heaven). Finally, the power of God is released in the physical realm to work in and through human beings. The enemy can and indeed does influence individuals. That’s why deliverance ministry and a prayer life set people free and keep them free. We must deal with the enemy and all his tactics.

Perhaps one of the least used forms of prayer in our clash of the kingdoms is praying in the Holy Ghost. While praying in tongues edifies us, it also allows the Holy Spirit to express Himself when we don’t know how to pray as we ought. When it comes to spiritual warfare, despite spiritual discernment, we still see through a glass darkly. We still don’t see everything that is coming against us in the realm of the spirit. Therefore, speaking in tongues is a valuable weapon in our spiritual arsenal.

Notice that the Scripture says the Holy Spirit gave them “clear and loud expression” (Acts 2:4 AMP). In the world of tongues, there are clear expressions, different expressions, and loud expressions. God is a God of personality and variety. He expresses His personality through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will give you clear and loud expressions when you speak in tongues; specific expressions and utterances that are supernatural, that are divine in their origin and purpose, and that have different purposes before God in the spiritual world.

Notice that the Bible says we speak in tongues. Speaking in tongues can be compared to speaking a natural language with all the various tones and sounds of that language. It is not just a form of monotone prayer, but a spiritual language and vocabulary that we use to pray with.

When we begin to speak a language in the natural, many different things open to us: experiences and avenues of expression that were formerly closed take on a whole new meaning. This is so with the supernatural as well. When we begin to speak in tongues, many new things and ideas open to us.

In the language of tongues there will be expression, purpose and communication in what you are speaking in the spirit world. For example, you will find when you get into the spirit realm that you can be before the Lord, but not necessarily speak directly to Him, although that’s a part of it, too.

There is another side, where you can be before Him in the spirit, and speak in tongues by the Holy Spirit as a form of spiritual warfare. You are not speaking to God, and you are not praying against God; you are in the spirit world, before the throne of God. Away from that place, when you use the language of tongues, you can correctly handle prayer requests and needs in a spiritual way with the help of the Holy Spirit working in and through your prayer language.

To be clear, you are not speaking directly to the devil in tongues. People sometimes ask, “Does the devil understand tongues?” I don’t think the devil understands tongues. The thing he does understand when we speak in tongues is the Holy Spirit and His power behind the tongues. The source of the tongues is the Holy Spirit, whether we’re speaking directly to God or we’re speaking out into the spirit realm, dealing with an enemy.

Whenever you deal with a supernatural enemy, God has supernatural weapons to overpower that enemy. Tongues is one of those weapons. The force behind the tongues is the Spirit of God, and He is a weapon! Jesus Himself said that He cast out devils by the Spirit of God (Matthew 12:28). You have the same Holy Spirit within you.

As we engage in a spiritual face-to-face conflict we allow God to dominate as He empowers our spiritual weapons and uses them to counter the enemy’s activities. Satan may be legally defeated, but he is still the lord of this world and he is busy at work. God is calling apostolic and prophetic believers to use each and every weapon at our disposal to enforce Kingdom rule on earth. Pray in tongues, stir up the gift and weapons of God within you, and let your most powerful prayer partner help you overcome the opposition.

Prayer Language and Speaking in Tongues
written by Nancy Bucca, September 25, 2008
Right on target! I have found that this gift of tongues often results in words of knowledge or a sense of what God is doing. I have found it much more effective
than any other form of prayer, especially when trying to determine the cause of an illness or other problem. No wonder this gift has come under such attack! More articles like this, please. We're not to be ignorant of spiritual gifts.

I believe in the power behind speaking/praying in tongues. You stated that you don't think the devil understand tongues. But can he speak it? I have been told that he can. As a Christian, that is something I have strugled with. I was once told by my wife as she argued with me, instead of joining her in this arguement I began to speak in tongues and she told me that it was the devils language and not God's. Ever since I struggle with it, being that I don't know what I say when I speak in tongues, I have no confidence. Please advice.
Note: I have been saved for three years. I first spoke in tongues as I was worshiping at home after my water baptism.

my son wants tongues

My son Austin is seeking the power of the Holy Ghost. He is attending a secular college and wants to be equipped to stand strong in his faith. Please ask God to pour it out on him.

Prayer Language
written by Ann, October 28, 2008
I agree with the writer of this article who states that the devil cannot understand tongues. But because I know that he counterfeits everything that God created, I believe that demonic (false) tongues exist. I know some saints of God who went through deliverance and the demon of false tongues was discerned and cast out of those people. I encourage the writer to shed some light on this topic, as the Holy Spirit leads, of course. I would also like to see an article, if possible, on the difference between tongues of men, tongues of angels (as mentioned in 1 Cor 13), and tongues of God.

This is it!

This is a great article. There is great power in speaking in tongues, especially after having some time of silent discernment where we listen to the Holy Spirit minister to us. Thanks so much for this article, and being an encouragement to all Christians who speak in tongues and those who desire to speak but have not spoken yet.

tongues of angels
written by teressa, September 17, 2009
Question? The word talks about us possibly speaking in the tongues of angels. If there is an angelic tongue that Holy Spirit may use through us, and the devil is considered to be a fallen angel, would he not understand that language or in the fall did he lose that ability? Also if the unknown language we speak is an ancient or modern language or one that is not known to us, would not the devil know the language of the other culture (in Acts they spoke with tongues not known to the speaker but the hearer understood)?

I've always wondered about this. Even if he does understand the language I believe the power of Holy Spirit behind it trumps anything he could do against it.

Speaking in Tongues
written by Lynn, September 17, 2009
To the one that was told that speaking in tongues was from the devil, read:

Luke 11:10-13
10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

You have to have faith, when you ask -- faith that your heavenly Father is not going to give you a serpent, or scorpion, which represent the demonic. God is a good & gracious heavenly Father, and if you ask for the Holy Spirit, it directly declares that God will give you the Holy Spirit, not a serpent.

As for speaking in tongues to your wife, the bible declares that he who speaks in tongues, except it be interpreted, should not speak to men, but unto God.

Also in Mk. 16:17, it says:
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Tongues is the sign of the believer, not the devil. He who speaks in tongues, also casts out devils.

We are not to attribute the work of the Holy Ghost to the devil. He who speaks a word against the son or the father may be forgiven, but he who speaks a word against the Holy Spirit, will not be forgiven, not in this life, nor in the life to come. God adjures us strongly:

Matt. 12:31-32
Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

As for false tongues. We must trust God. God is judge of all. The wheat and tares grow together until the Lord returns. It is best to have faith in the Father who provides to us as we ask -- and we do not ask for a serpent; we ask for the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:4, says:
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

They began to speak in tongues as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance -- not as the serpent gave them utterance.

Have faith that your heavenly Father desires to give you good gifts.

Tongues of the Spirit glorify God:
Acts 10:46
For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

Speak to others by revelation of the Holy Spirit, not by tongues (unless it is interpreted):
I Cor. 14:6
Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

Paul, who under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit of God wrote over half the New Testament, said of tongues:
I Cor. 14:8
I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all

And in Jude, the word says:
Jude 1:20
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost

Praying in tongues edifies oneself, and speaks mysteries unto God. If one speaks in tongues in the church, one should interpret, or else one coming into their midst will think he is mad.

Time would fail me to go into every aspect of this. Read I Cor. 12, 13, & 14
Acts 2 & Acts 10

Never once does the word of God teach about false tongues, specifically. It speaks of false brethren. God said, though, that the wheat and tares grow together until he comes. Trust God. He is God. He knows everything. Trust God and do good, and love one another -- and pray for one another.

Paul gave thanks to God for the gift of speaking in tongues more than the others. I also give God special thanks for the gift. I love to speak this wonderful, spiritual language that speaks directly to the Father. Thank God that I speak in tongues. one thing is for certain; the devil does not know what i'm saying; he wishes.

Regarding praying in Tongues
written by Betty Hadden, September 17, 2009
Yes, it is an awesome, powerful, gift that the Lord has given us because Romans 8:26-28 tell us that when we don't know how to pray, that the Holy Spirit will give us the unction in pray in accordance with the will of God.

The enemy comes and tries to make believers "afraid" of this because when it is exercise, we know that the Holy Ghost is prompting us to come against that which is trying to hurt and/or stop us or others.

I am very grateful for this precious gift, and have exercised it so very much in my life these last 30 years, and through my time spent with Him praying, He has revealed Himself mightily to me and through me for others!

In the Book of James, it is said that it is the effectual, fervant prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available to us. What could be more effectual than in allowing God the Holy Spirit gives the unction to pray perfectly?

Since the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God, this then is one of the greatest in our arsenal!

Praying in Tongues
written by Charles, September 18, 2009
I believe there is power in praying/speaking in Tongues. I must however stress on the fact that believers do not experience the victory in the supernatural because they have not develop this gift in their lives. Tongues should mature as a believer matures spiritually.I believe as one matures so his language develop, just as it is naturally so it should be spiritually and then believers can effectively wage war on the enemies. We (Church) have so much available to us that we can live victorious lives and demonstrate the Kingdom of God.

Our Prayer is a Gift from God
written by Cheryl Wilson, September 18, 2009
We should be grateful for the gift of tongues. Jesus lead captivity and gave gifts unto men, therefore, we should use what God has given us to live a victorious life.

Please encourage people to "pray in the spirit" or use their tongues to build themselves up. When we are tired, we are more prone to attacks of the enemy and the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds. We have to do our part.
I pray people are delivered from tradition and the commandments of men which hinder the truth about spiritual gifts.

We should be more sensitive to the spiritual realm now more than ever, this mean hearing and obeying the voice of the Holy Spirit. We should be experiencing more of God and moving away from complacency. I agree with the author it is crucial for us to use our tongues as well as the other gifts God has given us to build up others as well.
