Victory! Because of your calls, the House Judiciary Committee has agreed to hold a hearing on hate crimes bill, H.R.1913!
The original plan of the chair of the committee, Representative John Conyers, was to move this bill quietly out of the committee without a hearing, then on to the full House and get it passed with as little fan fare as possible. The hearing is scheduled for 10:15 AM Wednesday of this week.
Call the judiciary committee members and tell them to vote NO on hate crimes. For a list see the link below.
Nations where these kinds of "hate laws" have been passed have resulted in the loss of religious liberty and freedom of speech. Hate crime laws create unequal justice, giving special protection to those deemed vulnerable to hate crimes. But law already protects all people from violent crime, no matter what the reason.
This bills vague language and broad definition of "intimidation" could be used to prosecute anyone who speaks in opposition to homosexuality, including pastors.
Call the judiciary committee members and tell them to protect your freedom of speech and religious liberty.
Both the Republicans and the Democrats of the House Judiciary Committee have said that have received "a ton of calls." Your calls have helped change Conyers' mind.
While this is a victory, there is still much to do in order to make sure this hearing is not just a show trial. The hearing is Conyers attempt to find political cover so they can look as if they are accommodating the will of the people.
But do not plan on the hearing being fair in the assessment of this hate crime bill. The members on the committee who oppose this law must step up and ask the hard questions and expose the terrible infringement on freedom of speech and religion this bill will introduce.
Be assured the proponents of hate crime bills are working diligently to see that this bill passes, so we need to work with even more diligence!
TAKE ACTION:
Call all the members of the judiciary committee today and demand they stop all hate crimes legislation from passing now, and in the future!
