I want to try and calm your fears a bit. When I got back last week I had been watching the news in the U.S. There are some problems here, but it seems that the media is trying to portray Honduras as a war zone. Actually, it is nothing like that at all. The only conflict at all has gone on in the capital and it has been around the Brazillian embassy.
The Mel Zelaya followers, which seems to include the U.S. State Department, are trying to convince the world that all of Honduras is falling into civil war because they want Mel back. That could not be more un-true. At least 80 percent of the people here DO NOT want Mel Zelaya back in power. He knows that if he gets on the street that he will be arrested.
The Brazillian President wants him out of their embassy. He is trying to cause people to riot from there. It seems that he has convinced the world that his people really want him back. That is just a lie!
There are no tanks in the streets here. There are no soldiers roaming the highways. I was really apprehensive about getting back here last Friday. However, it is business as usual in Honduras. We left the airport and drove home from San Pedro Sula without seeing one road block or any soldiers or tanks.
I have been in my office on line every day this week. We had church service Sunday and there was an outside service involving all the churches in town to celebrate the day of the Bible on Sunday evening. No problems. There is no curfew right now. The airports and borders are open. In fact they were only really closed one day last week.
What you are being fed by the media and the State Department seems to be fear tactics to pressure the current government here to let Zelaya back in office. It is not working. If you come here today and drive around this country you will see what I have seen for nearly 14 years, a peacful, God fearing people that just want to get on with their lives. The do not want the EX-president back. Even most of his followers agree that it would be a mistake this point. The elections will be in a few weeks and he can do nothing with only a few months left on his term anyway. He will only have time to cause more problems for Honduras.
Please do not believe what you hear from the major news networks. I have invited Hillary Clinton, Pres. Obama and Sen. Richard Shelby to come and I would show them around the country. I have yet to get a response from any of them. Yet they can pressure this government to do something that they would never do without seeing the reality of the situation on the ground here?
Anyway, we are fine here. The boys are in school and have been except for a couple of days last week. The stores are all open as well as the roads. Well, except for the potholes. Acutally the road construction here in Sigua. is almost finished. We will have a four lane higway passing our little town in a few weeks.
We do ask you to continue praying for Honduras and that Mel Zelaya's heart would be touched by the Lord. He just needs to get SAVED. Also pray for the interrim government and the upcomming elections. This mess needs to be put behind us!
A friend from Miami was in my office this morning. He said, "I almost canceled my trip yesterday. Where are all the tanks?" He told me that they are actually showing tanks in the street on the news up there. I was at the base yesterday. I didn't even see one there!
