The first runner up in the Miss USA pageant, Carrie Prejean is heading to Washington to launch her campaign against same-sex marriage.
The battle began when the homosexual judge Perez Hilton asked a politically charged question, "Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalise same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit. Why or why not?"
Prejean being a Christian, understanding this to be test from God hesitated at first, but didn't back down, saying: "Well, I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage .... And you know what, in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offence to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think it should be - between a man and a woman. Thank you very much."
As part of the campaign a new television ad was launched featuring footage of the 21 year old Miss California explaining her support for marriage between a man and a woman, and then being verbally attacked by gay marriage activists. The ad also features footage of a gay marriage activist from the Human Rights Campaign referring to supporters of marriage as "outright bigots."
National Organization for Marriage (NOM), a pro traditional marriage organization has joined Prejean in her campaign.
"Carrie only said what the majority of Americans believe: marriage means a man and a woman," said Maggie Gallagher, president of NOM. "Her example resonates, especially to many young Americans, because she chose to stand for truth rather than surrender her core values."
Gallagher said the behavior of Carrie's critics raises questions in a lot of folks' minds, "If this is how they treat good people who disagree with them now, what will they do once they have the power of the law on their side?"
Prejean has risked everything in answering celebrity blogger Perez Hilton's question about legalizing same-sex marriage, it may have cost her the title as Miss California.
In numerous interviews Prejean remains consistent in her conviction about marriage saying that, "Marriage is something that is very dear to my heart." And now she's on her way to Washington D.C. to do her part to save it.
