Is God for bigger government intruding on peoples lives or is He for smaller government where the people take responsibility and care for each other? The latter is far more in line with Christ's teachings and the Kingdom of God.
But the religious left doesn't think so. They instead serve and worship at the altar of big government and the State as lord of all.
Religious left activist Jim Wallis is leading a new "40 Days for Health Reform" campaign for President Obama's proposed government dominated overhaul of U.S. health care. Wallis unveiled the campaign during a media conference call. Next week President Obama will also join Wallis and others on a national call in an audio webcast on health care reform.
Wallis strongly denounced opponents of Obama's Healthcare plan, which creates a government insurance system that critics warn could ultimately overwhelm private insurance and lead us into a single payer provider. "This moral issue cannot be demagogued in the street," Wallis said, warning against Obamacare opponents whom he claimed "want to shut down democracy." Wallis also insisted that the Obama plan would not underwrite abortion or euthanasia.
"I see lies being told, I see fears being raised, and I see violence even being threatened at these mob sessions," the Sojourners president said, alluding to congressional "Town Hall" meetings where lawmakers have met with a critical reception from many constituents concerned about potentially dramatic government led changes to the health care system.
Wallis does not speak for all Christians. Mark Tooley, president of the Institute on Religion and Democracy commented, "The new Evangelical Left, like the old Social Gospel religious left of decades ago, always materialistically equates big government and centralized control with the Kingdom of God. They learned no lessons from the 20th century, when big government again and again wreaked destruction and was often the antithesis of Christian teachings. For the religious left, Obamacare is just one more opportunity for coercion and eradication of private initiative."
Tooley continued, "Revealingly, the religious left seems uninterested in lowering doctors' expenses by limiting lawsuit abuse or providing tax credits towards private coverage. Such proposals distract from the larger agenda of expanding State power."
The truth is the Kingdom of God doesn't need any help from big and ever increasing government facism. Christ rules through His Church of born-again believers not through the State or a superior class of political leaders imposing their will on others.
Would God be pleased with a health care system that puts people on 3 months to a year waiting list of rationed care? Or a panel of political bureaucrats decided the fate of an elderly loved one? The religious left best be careful in promoting this health reform. While God wants healthcare for all -- and he already provided it through the Name of Jesus and some fine medical doctors to boot -- it shouldn't come by forced hand of rogue political socialists. Senators and Congressmen should listen to the people. They are scared, angry and ready to explode because they are being ignored. It's time for Washington D.C. to stop lording themselves over the people that sent them to represent them.
Scripture declares, "But Jesus called the disciples and said, “You know that the rulers of the gentiles lord it over them and their superiors act like tyrants over them. That's not the way it should be among you. Instead, whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. That's the way it is with the Son of Man. He did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many people” (Matthew 20:25-28 ISV).
The religious left can learn a lot from Christ's words.
