After-School Christian Club Wins in Federal Court

In a ruling that enforces the rights of Christians in a school system that seems to pay more respect to other gods, a federal court judge in California has ruled in favor of Child Evangelism Fellowship of San Diego in its case against the San Diego City School District.

Child Evangelism Fellowship alleged that the school district has discriminated against its after-school program since 1999. The organization filed suit when the district refused to provide equal access for the Good News Clubs at the Ericson Elementary School.

Christian Group Files Suit Against School District
In another case of alleged discrimination against a religious group on campus, the Liberty Counsel on Tuesday filed a federal lawsuit against the Cobb County School District.

The Liberty Counsel is representing Child Evangelism Fellowship of Georgia (CEF). Liberty calls district policy unconstitutional and claims it is causing “irreparable harm in violation of the First Amendment.

At issue is a fee the district charges CEF for its Good News Clubs to use the school facilities after school. Liberty says the district's policy also discriminates in terms of the time the Christian group may use the facilities compared to similar secular groups.

Federal Judge Upholds Texas Pledge Containing Phrase Under God
DALLAS – A Dallas federal judge has ruled that the phrase “under God” in the Texas Pledge of Allegiance is constitutional on March 27. The court’s decision rejected a lawsuit filed by a Dallas couple, who unsuccessfully argued that the state pledge violated the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause.

“Today’s ruling protects young Texans’ right to pledge their allegiance to ‘one state, under God’ – just as they pledge to ‘one nation, under God,’” Attorney General Abbott said. “The United States Supreme Court has repeatedly held that patriotic acknowledgments of the Almighty are constitutional. Texans can rest assured that we will continue defending their children’s ability to recite the state Pledge of Allegiance each morning.”

Obama Nominates Sotomayor to U.S. Supreme Court
President Barack Obama on Monday nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court to fill the seat of retiring Justice David Souter.

If confirmed, Sotomayor would become the first Hispanic and third woman to serve on the High Court.

But who is Sotomayor? And what does she stand for? Will she uphold the Constitution? Or will she legislate from the bench? Is she the liberal choice many expected? Or will she defend the spirit of the Constitution? Ultimately, does Sotomayor change the face of the U.S. Supreme Court?
