Just like Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal, the time is coming when God’s New Testament mouthpieces will confront modern day merchandisers. The true will defy the false. The holy will challenge the unholy. Until that day, spirits of divination, with a little help from the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life, are working overtime to woo God’s true prophets to the side of err.
Believers are asking plenty of questions about gold dust, gemstones, angels and other supernatural manifestations. Are these supernatural signs and wonders from the Holy Spirit? Or are they demonic in nature? Randall Grier offers some perspective in this article that separates the holy from the profane. So read on – an get some answers that will settle the questions of your heart.
“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect” (Matthew 24:24). The word “deceive” in this verse means “to deceive by leading into error, to seduce.” The purpose of great signs and wonders by false prophets, or what most people call ministers or preachers, is to deceive or seduce people for the purpose of leading them into error.
Should New Testament prophets pronounce judgments and curses or should they edify, comfort and exhort the people of God and nations? From Isaiah to Jeremiah to Elisha, Old Testament prophets commonly pronounced judgments and curses on nations and peoples. In fact, prophesying doom and gloom on nations and pronouncing judgments on individuals was seemingly part and parcel of the prophetic ministry before Jesus Christ, the Prophet, became a curse for us.
Thousands of years later, some New Testament prophets are still operating in this flow, but are all of them speaking on behalf of the Spirit of God? Or could some of them be prophesying out of hurts and wounds, pride or some sinister spirit? The apostolic is posing some pointed questions in the spirit of order and stabili
ty of the essential prophetic ministry. At the heart of the matter is a single, yet critical question: Is it Biblical for modern day prophets to pronounce judgments and curses on people and cities today? It’s a controversial question that many are not bold enough to ask, but it’s one that needs to be discussed among apostolic and prophetic believers who are committed to restoring the accurate prophetic ministry. No matter how controversial the question, the answers are always found in the Word of God.
Jonah’s experience in the belly of a whale may be a kid’s church favorite, but there are serious warnings here for New Testament prophets. While the Book of Jonah tells a familiar story, deeper examination demonstrates two spiritual death knells for prophets: rebellion and stubbornness. The Lord told Jonah to go to Nineveh and preach against the wickedness of its society. Jonah’s immediate response was to run away from the Lord and board a ship that was headed in the opposite direction toward Tarshish. Jonah rebelled against the word of the Lord because he wanted Nineveh to experience the wrath of God instead of the mercy of God. Jonah knew that Jehovah would forgive the people there if his message brought them to repentance.
